What size subwoofer should you get?

Choosing a subwoofer size comes down to space, music and expectations. A plain-language guide for daily drivers.

There is no single best size

Subwoofers commonly come in sizes from 8 to 12 inches and larger. The right one depends on your vehicle, your space, your music and your budget.

Rules of thumb

  • Smaller subs (8 to 10 inches): easier to fit, quick and tight sounding, good for many daily drivers.
  • Mid-size subs (10 to 12 inches): a popular balance of output and size.
  • Larger subs: more output and depth, but they need more space and power.

Enclosure and power matter as much as size

A sealed enclosure tends to sound tighter. A ported enclosure can play louder but is larger. A powered subwoofer combines the sub and the amplifier in one compact box and suits tight spaces. The amplifier should match the subwoofer, with correct wiring and gain.

Think about your cargo space

The trunk or cargo area is the trade-off. Under-seat and slim enclosures keep space free, while larger boxes give more bass. We can show you options that fit your vehicle.

Match the subwoofer and the amplifier

Subwoofers list an RMS power rating and an impedance. The amplifier should deliver power in line with that rating, not far above or below it. A powered subwoofer skips this step because the amplifier is built in and already matched to the sub.

Questions to answer before you buy

  • How much cargo space can you give up?
  • What music do you listen to most?
  • Do you want bass you feel, or bass that fills in the low end?
  • What is your budget for the subwoofer, amplifier and wiring together?

Common setups

  • Compact powered sub under a seat or in a corner of the cargo area for everyday listening
  • Sealed box in a trunk for tight, accurate bass
  • Ported box in a larger trunk or cargo area for louder, deeper bass
  • Custom enclosure when the space is unusual or you want to keep a clean look

Installation notes

Wiring and gain settings matter as much as size. A well-installed small subwoofer often sounds better than a poorly installed large one.

Quick answers

Is a bigger subwoofer always better?

No. Larger subwoofers need more space and power, and the enclosure, amplifier match and installation quality affect the sound as much as size does.

Will a subwoofer fit in my truck or SUV?

Often yes. Under-seat, slim and powered options keep cargo space free. Send us your vehicle and we will show you what fits.

Do I need an amplifier for a subwoofer?

Yes. Either a separate amplifier or a powered subwoofer that has one built in.

Sealed or ported?

Sealed boxes tend to sound tighter and can be smaller. Ported boxes are larger and can play louder at certain frequencies.
